| Singles: Retirement planning is in your court If you're single, you're not alone - single people currently make up 43% of the adult population.* But you are solely responsible for your financial future, including saving adequate funds and assembling safeguards to cover your retirement years. Single people may be more likely than couples to postpone retirement planning. The longer you wait, however, the more you may be risking your retirement. Here's why: You'll pay more for housing. Couples generally share housing and other expenses. Unless you plan to spend your golden years with a roommate, you'll need to save enough to cover the cost of living solo. Social Security won't be enough. Social Security benefits account for 90% of income for four of every 10 unmarried retirees, compared to two of every 10 married couples.** Depending on your marital history, you may not qualify for spousal benefits, and potential future changes to Social Security could affect your benefit level. So it makes sense to build other sources of retirement income. You have one less safety net. Many couples have a second income to fall back on in tough times. A serious accident or illness could eliminate your opportunity to earn, so it's important to accumulate as much as possible in your employer-sponsored retirement plan while you are working. Finally, a healthy emergency fund can prevent unexpected medical bills, a job loss, or unexpected repairs from throwing your finances (and retirement dreams) off track. Don't delay
